2012 BMW 5-Series Review. Redesigned for 2011, the 5-series sedan got a handsome new suit of sheetmetal and some new mechanicals underneath. Fuel economy improves this year, as the 528i and the 535i gain auto stop-start, which can shut down the engine when idling at a stop. The 528i drops its straight-six engine for a 2.0-liter turbo four. We're sad to see the six go (although the 535i retains its turbocharged version), but the turbo four actually makes a bit more power than the six. The steering in the current 5 has lost some feel, but the chassis deftly combines a plush ride and superior handling. Buyers who want to take things further can spring for the sport package or the M sport package, both of which include dynamic damper control and an increased top-speed limiter. A manual transmission is available for the rear-wheel-drive versions of the 535i and the V-8-powered 550i. All-wheel-drive models, the 528i, and the Gran Turismo use an eight-speed automatic. Buyers who go the autobox route (a no-charge option where it's not already standard) are treated to one of the best automatics on the market. The 5-series Gran Turismo hatchback has effectively replaced the wagon. It's more than just a hatchback version of the 5-series. It's actually sort of a cross between the X5 SUV and the 5-series sedan. Compared to the latter, it's considerably larger -- longer, wider, and taller. Its sloping roofline gives it rather odd proportions, but its long wheelbase makes for plentiful rear-seat legroom (as much as in a 7-series), and, of course, it has lots of cargo space with the rear seats down.

BMW has released a new video which highlights the design process behind the
2012 3-Series.

In the clip, exterior designer Christopher Weil says the aggressive front fascia borrows cues from BMW's heritage. He also comments the sedan has been given a Scandinavian influence for an extra bit of character.
Inside, BMW adopted a "layering" theme which attempts to bring "lightness" to the cabin. According to interior designer Christian Bauer, this makes it easy to create different areas for the passenger and driver. Bauer also contends the sedan's cockpit is highlighted by sharp lines and clean surfaces.

Contrary to rumors and reports circulating the internets, BMW will, in fact, bring the next 3 Series wagon to the U.S. But it's still a ways out.
According to Autoblog sources, the touring variant of the F30 3 Series will likely land on European shores within the next year, with the coupe and convertible versions arriving in late 2013. The 5 Series Gran Turismo hasn't met its lofty sales expectations in the United States, so BMW is considering bringing the 5 Series Touring back to our shores.
Although nothing is set in stone, Autoblog has learned that the possibility of the wagon making a reappearance on U.S. soil is back on the table. Right after the unveiling of
2012 BMW M5 F10 Concept, Prior Design has introduced its aerodynamic kit for the new

5-Series. Still, the tuning company didn’t release any further information about its project except some small pictures.
However, the aerodynamic kit includes refined front bumper, new rear bumper and modified side skirts. Our opinion is that the front looks a lot better than M5 variant, but he rear still looks like it is designed by Audi.
Prior F10 also received huge wheels finished in black and some vinyls with the logo of the company.
There is also no information on which model will be ased Prior Design F10 and whether there will be a performance packages, but hopefully they will offer some ECU re-maps for the mighty turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

But shady pictures of renderings aren't quite the same as seeing the car in the flesh. Fortunately for everyone on the interwebs, the good folk over at the 5Post forum have managed to get their paws on what looks to be a trove of legitimate photos of the body kit on a 2011 5 Series. The shots show the new front bumper, complete with its aggressive new lower air inlets borrowed from the M-Sport program on the 3 Series, side skirts and a glossy rear valance.
The kit also throws in a tiny lip spoiler for the rear trunk lid and a more aggressive suspension setup for a slightly more sporty feel. The photos also confirm that the smaller, three-spoke M steering wheel will show up as well as a set of unique seats. Fancy. From what we can tell, buyers opting for the sport package will also be able to choose between two new wheel programs that include 18-inch and 19-inch options.

If the fuel gauge in your 2010 or 2011 BMW 5-Series sedan or 5-Series Gran Turismo tells you that you've got plenty of petrol, you may want to hit the gas station before going on that long trip anyway. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website reports that 6,080 5-Series sedan and GT models built between January 12 and July 1, 2010 are being recalled for a faulty fuel sensor. In certain cases, the sensor can wedge itself against the tank, which will lead to the fuel gauge reading that the vehicle has more fuel than it actually does. Drivers suddenly saddled with a fuel-free Bimmer while driving could wind up getting into an accident or being stranded by the side of the road, and that's not good at all.
The NHTSA website currently shows that BMW still hasn't provided an appropriate fix for the issue, but when the automaker does, owners will doubtlessly be able to head over to the nearest BMW dealer for a free repair. Head across the jump to read over the official NHTSA press release.

Do you drive a 2010 or 2011 BMW 5 Series or 5 Series GT? If so, you’ll be hearing from BMW in the very near future, as all models of 5 Series cars are being recalled. At issue is a fuel level sensor which can get stuck on the inside of the fuel tank, indicating a higher level of fuel than the car actually has. Drivers can unintentionally run their vehicle out of fuel, increasing the risk of accident, especially in traffic. No accidents have been reported to date.

Motor Authority reports that approximately 6,100 vehicles, having build dates between January 12, 2010 and July 1, 2010, are affected by this recall. BMW has yet to announce recall dates or a specific fix, which will likely involve replacing the fuel tank level sensor.

The BMW 5-Series first premiered during the early 1970s as a midsize luxury car with just the right amount of pep, style, and comfort. The second generation of the 5-Series (E28) rolled off the line and onto dealer lots in 1982. A slight redesign was made to the exterior, as custom headlights, bumpers, and taillights were implemented. As for the powertrain, the most commonly used configuration was an inline six-cylinder. Highlights included a turbodiesel inline six that was available in Europe.
